We just wrapped up our six-week summer programs, including Creative Expressions Dance Camp, Youth and Teen/Adult Intensives.

Creative Expressions is recreational, cultural enrichment. It offers an introduction to dance for beginners and for those with some experience. Students took dance classes for eight hours every day with a culminating showcase at the end. We had many different classes available this summer, including Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop, African, Contemporary, and a class where the students were able to create their own choreography! We also had some special workshops in Caribbean, Latin, and a week-long Cheer Camp Intensive. We did more than dance this summer, we went on field trips to Leimert Park where students participated in the LA Commons, Day of the Ancestors and Festival of Masks with self-made pieces of art and masks. We went to Zuma Beach, and the California African American Museum where students learned about the LA 1992 Up-Rising.

We were very excited to welcome Jerry Douglas to LWDT this summer! Jerry was the first African-American lead soloist in the Royal Ballet and he came to LWDT this summer to teach ballet to students in our Youth and Teen/Adult Intensives. Even some of the LWDT ballet teachers were wishing they could take lessons from him! We look forward to his limited time with us in the fall, so listen up for listings of special classes and workshops!

Other Intensive guests include:

Royce Zachary, coordinator of Dance for Howard University, member of IABD

Saroya Corbitt, PhD Candidate, UCLA, Certified Dunham Instructor, member of IABD

Jan Blunt, Certified Dunham instructor, member of IABD

Jahanna Blunt, West African Dance
